Paver Installation · Bay Area, CA · 9 Counties
We’ve replaced hundreds of cracked Bay Area driveways with premium interlocking paver systems that last 30–50 years, drain properly, and add real resale value. Every project personally managed by the owner — CSLB #1075979.
If your driveway was installed decades ago, there’s a good chance it’s already showing signs of wear — cracks, stains, uneven areas, or damage caused by soil movement over time. In the Bay Area, changing soil conditions and seasonal moisture can cause traditional concrete surfaces to shift and deteriorate faster than expected.
Paver driveways offer a more durable and visually appealing solution. Unlike poured concrete, interlocking pavers are designed to adapt better to natural ground movement, helping reduce cracking while maintaining a clean, high-end appearance for years to come. Individual pavers can also be repaired or replaced more easily if needed, without removing the entire surface.
Beyond durability, a professionally installed paver driveway can dramatically improve curb appeal and add value to your property. Whether you prefer classic Belgard pavers, modern designs, or natural stone finishes, our team creates custom driveway solutions built for long-term performance and timeless style throughout the Bay Area.

Concrete driveways in the Bay Area fail faster than anywhere else in California — expansive Diablo clay swells in winter and shrinks in summer, cracking rigid slabs from below within 15–25 years. Interlocking pavers flex with that movement, drain through the surface, and cost $0 to repair unit by unit.
30+ years longer lifespan
Properly installed paver driveways last 30–50 years in Bay Area conditions. Poured concrete lasts 15–25 years before cracking becomes structural.
$0 repair cost for a settled unit
One unit settles — we lift it, re-level the base, re-set it. No saw cutting, no patching, no color mismatch. Pavers win on long-term maintenance cost, decisively.
Drains through the surface
Paver joint systems allow water to drain through rather than running off. Some Bay Area cities now require permeable paving — pavers meet this requirement.
Measurable resale value impact
A Belgard paver driveway in Willow Glen or a travertine courtyard in Saratoga is a component of property value that buyers and appraisers recognize.

Properly installed interlocking concrete pavers last 30–50 years in Bay Area conditions. No freeze-thaw cycles — the primary cause of paver failure in colder climates. What we have is expansive clay soil that moves seasonally. Pavers handle that movement by flexing; poured concrete cracks. The main maintenance is polymeric sand replenishment every 5–10 years and periodic pressure washing.
Most likely yes. San Jose (PBCE), Saratoga (Community Development), Fremont (Building and Safety), and most Bay Area cities require permits for driveway replacements over 500 sq ft or any grade changes. We manage all submissions at no additional charge — you don’t deal with the building department at all.
Primarily three things: material cost (standard concrete pavers vs. premium travertine or natural stone), site conditions (flat lot vs. hillside with limited equipment access), and square footage. Both start from the same foundation of quality base preparation, proper edge restraints, and polymeric sand.
Physical installation takes 3–7 business days. Permit processing varies by city — San Jose PBCE typically takes 7–14 business days; Saratoga can take 2–4 weeks for projects requiring design review.
Yes. If your paver driveway has areas that have settled, we often re-level the affected sections without replacing the entire installation — excavating beneath the settled units, correcting the base, and re-setting the pavers. Far less expensive than full replacement and often extends the driveway’s life by 15–20 years.
Souza & Son’s Inc is a CSLB-licensed paver installation contractor serving all 9 Bay Area counties — Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo, Marin, San Francisco, Napa, Sonoma, and Solano. Every paver project is managed personally by the owner Souza from the initial on-site estimate through permit closeout and final walkthrough. No subcontracting, no handoffs, no surprises.
The Bay Area is one of the worst climates in California for poured concrete driveways — not because of rain or cold, but because of soil. Diablo clay, the dominant subsoil across Santa Clara, Alameda, and Contra Costa counties, expands significantly when wet and shrinks when dry. A poured concrete slab has no ability to flex with that movement. Within 15–25 years, the majority of Bay Area concrete driveways develop structural cracks, heaved sections, and surface spalling that no sealer or patch can permanently fix. Interlocking pavers solve this problem by design.
The quality of a paver installation is almost entirely determined by what happens before the first paver is laid. On Bay Area clay soils, sub-base engineering requires a minimum 6-inch Class II aggregate base compacted to 95% relative density, geotextile fabric between the native clay and aggregate base to prevent clay migration, and precise finish grade to ensure positive drainage away from structures. We verify compaction with a nuclear density gauge on every project.
Paver installation pricing in the Bay Area varies by county, material selection, site conditions, and access. The ranges below are based on projects we’ve completed:
| Project Type | Price Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Concrete paver driveway (1,500 sq ft) | $25,500 – $51,000 | Sub-base, edging, polymeric sand, permits included |
| Travertine / natural stone driveway (1,500 sq ft) | $45,000 – $100,000+ | Premium material, wet-set — Saratoga, LAH, Los Gatos typical |
| Paver patio (500 sq ft) | $8,500 – $19,000 | Base prep, pattern layout, edging, polymeric sand |
| Pool deck pavers (600 sq ft) | $10,200 – $22,000 | Slip-resistant profile, drainage pitch, coping interface |
| Walkway / entry path (150 sq ft) | $2,550 – $6,000 | Base, edging, polymeric sand |
